2023 is fast approaching and the opportunity to head to Sodwana for a few days with my fishing buddy Peter has come up. I have fished Sodwana before and I feel like last time we were there we sort of cracked the code and solved the place.

We caught Giant Guitarfish, Speckled Snapper, Cave Bass, Cat-face Rockcod, Brassy Kingfish, Three-spot Pompano and Bastard Mullet to name a few. My strategy will be to target fish in three specific ways.

  1. Spinning. I have been investigating slow pitch shore jigging which has become quite popular this last while. Doing this I hope to catch at least 3 kingfish species, Three-spot Pompano, Bastard Mullet and at least one other species. (Total: 5)

  2. Edibles bait-fishing. This ranges from larger species like Southern Pompano, Speckled Snapper, Cave Bass, Cat-face Rockcod to the smaller fish like Karanteen, Stone Bream, Zebra etc. I am hoping for 10 species of this variety. (Total: 15)

  3. Non-edibles live bait. I am looking forward to coming to terms with Giant Guitarfish, Blackfin Shark, Ragged-tooth Shark, Diamond Skate, Honey-comb Stingray etc. I am hoping for 5 species here. (Total: 20)

This would give me a trip total of 20 fish and push my list to 45. It would be an amazing beginning to the year!
