After a fairly lengthy road-trip from Johannesburg we arrived in Swakopmund. After much talking to people and trying to get info from cagey locals, I headed out. Bait here is interesting, very different to what we use on the Wild Coast and in KZN. The mackerel here are HUGE! I saw a mackerel for sale that was nearly a metre long! White Mussel, Harder (mullet) and Octopus are the top baits and obviously mackerel is always the boss for the Bronzies outside of a live bait. The fish occur in three basic categories. Rock fish (Galjoen, Blacktail etc), bigger edibles (Steenbras, Kob etc) and then inedibles (Spotted Gully Sharks, Cow Sharks, Bronze Whalers). I am using my 13ft Bluefish Zero for the rockfish, the 14ft Evo Zero for the bigger edibles and the Horizon Zero XH for the inedibles. I also have the Trini with the Technium Elite in case I want to slide. There has been a lot of grass in the water so I am waiting for that to settle before attempting big baits. So far I have managed to get my daughter onto two galjoen and I have managed a Klipvis and a blacktail. I still need a Galjoen. I am really hoping to break over the 22 species mark while I am here.
